Galtung Triangle: Ukraine Conflict
Ukraine has struggled to escape Russian control for the majority of its life after the Soviet Union's collapse. Even when it was under Russia the country has been racked by consistent disasters including but not limited to the collapse of the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor. The reason why Russia is so desperate for Ukraine is that, from the days of 1920-1991, Ukraine was a major part of the Soviet economy. While Ukraine has suffered a lot of problems with Russia and other factors, the conflict I'll be speaking of today is specifically The Russian Occupation crisis that went from March 2014 onwards.
It all started back when Russian special forces occupied the eastern area of Ukraine, specifically the Crimean peninsula. This was an example of violent behavior, though it was done under the (likely false) pretense that Russia was "protecting its port access to the Black Sea". Over the next four years, a conflict in that area would break out, killing a total of ~10,000 people. This continued conflict was an obvious dispute over territory. Which falls well under the realm of a Contradiction.
After this scenario, the Russians attacked 3 Ukrainian vessels, they did so under the claim that Ukraine had "violated Russian waters". They then blocked the channel with a freighter. This is another example of both behavior and contradictions. This is an unwarranted attack to claim territory. The UN agrees with my sentiment, stating that the violent attack was a violation of international law.
To name a few more of Russia's offenses in this conflict, they supported rebels who took over various government buildings, began a proper invasion of the Eastern border of Ukraine, and launched rockets over the border in support of the rebels. This is an example of various forms of violent conflict as mentioned earlier. Russia is attacking under false pretenses in an attempt to gain territory. It's a stretch but I presume that Ukraine's previous occupation by the Soviet union might even add the third point of the triangle, attitudes and assumptions through victimhood and trauma, to our imaginary diagram. While my bias prevents me from seeing completely perfectly into this conflict, I feel the need to point out that Ukraine is clearly the victim in this situation.
