Uighur Muslims in China

In 2018 the Human Rights Watch reported an increase in suppression against the Uighur Muslims in China, with China detaining nearly one million people in political re-education camps (brainwashing,) along with evidence of intense torture and mistreatment. Despite worldwide criticism towards China and its treatment of Muslims and refugees, they continue to disregard the universal and interdependent human rights given to everyone.

China has been undermining the universal rights given to everyone in multiple ways, with all of it directed towards the Muslim groups. Even Muslims that have yet to be detained face prejudices against their practice of religion and their freedom of movement. That is a perfect example of the lack of human rights given to them. The universal human rights state that “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion” (Article 18.) Furthermore, as China continues to detain practicing Muslims due to their religion it’s an immediate breach of human rights.

In court, the Muslims have virtually no chance of winning due to the prejudices against them in China. Article 6 of the Human Rights Act states that “everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial tribunal established by law” (Article 6.) this, unfortunately, is not the case for the Muslims and they have no way of fighting it. If they are accused of being a terrorist, unfortunately, their chance of defending themselves is slim to none.

Another big issue regarding human rights in China is the lack of free speech. Abdurehim Imin Parach is a Uighur Muslim who fled to Turkey after many detentions in China due to his open criticism of how China treats his people. In 2019, he was arrested for no reason by the Turkish police. After being detained for three months without any explanation he was released. Parach believes that China was behind his arrest, but he has yet to obtain a solid answer.

China has been continuously tightening their grip on Muslim inhabited cities such as Xinjiang and Ningxi Hu, adding more frequent police patrols and arresting more Muslims each week. With this, they are blatantly ignoring the human rights given to us at birth and causing terror for the Muslim inhabitants every day.
